James and Michael met up in Saigon (also unpopularly known as Ho Chi Minh City) in the winter of 2006, where they spent countless hours idling at cafes, watching the city reveal itself gracefully, frenetically. A diversion to the Mekong Delta showed them a vast landscape of water, where people have adapted to the rhythms, opportunities, and deprivations of this fluid element.
