The challenge of the project was to create a generous backyard space from a sloping terrain.  Retaining walls were used when possible, and the existing boulders of the hillside were incorporated into the design, so that human space seamlessly flows into natural space. A pool serves as the central focus of the garden. Board-formed concrete was used for a linear water feature, built-in grill, and seatwalls, the color and texture of which echoes that of the hillside with its tan-colored rock outcroppings. Built-in wood benches and a concrete fire bowl define an intimate seating area to one side. The plant palette was kept to mostly grasses, which capture the nearby ocean breezes and visually tie the garden to the wild terrain beyond.
