A mid-century architectural gem constructed in 1958, this office complex was designed by South Pasadena-based architects Whitney Smith and Wayne Williams. The original project landscape architects were Eckbo, Dean and Williams, and the planners were Si Eisner and Lyle Stewart. The innovative layout of three separate office modules unified by a vaulted roof constructed of metal mesh encourages interaction among the offices. The roof provides shelter for both interior and exterior spaces, which are further stitched together by common courtyards and small gardens. Based upon archival material from the University of California at Berkeley, the renovations to the outdoor spaces strive to respect the design of Eckbo, Dean and Williams while updating some materials to meet contemporary demands.
